In Adutlhood's Opening scene the producers use this Medium-Close Shot to emphasise that Noel Clark (Sam Peel) is the centre of attention in this specific scene. Noel Clark's face is blacked out to show that people watching this film for the first may not know who he is which give the impression that he is a mysterious, dark character. Also the scene is shot in front of Noel Clark to give the impression that we are in the shoes of the victim and that we are intimidated by him. Furthermore in the background the other people are just standing looking at Noel which also gives the impression that they are either to scared or weak to intervene with him.
